Although I can't put my finger on them, I feel there are other forces at work in our season of madness. Our society is being churned by many individuals and organizations for both ideological and financial reasons.
Many aspects of our culture, especially social media and journalism, reward churn and manufactured outrage, anything to capture the eyes of the doom scrolling public. Social media obsession was already a thing, but the lockdowns related to COVID-19 made it exponentially worse. Social media became a primary vector for the madness. We didn't even realize we were circling the bowl until we were halfway down the drain.
