We must remember why this happened. Terrorism is not the mindless irrational mechanism some imagine it to be. This was not an unthinking rampage. Hamas meticulously planned the attack for over a year. The group’s leader Ismail Haniyeh is an educated man with a degree in Islamic literature. Mohammed Deif, one of the leaders of Hamas’s military wing al-Qassam Brigades, has a bachelor’s degree in science.
Unfortunately this is true. I feel stupid, as the child of Nazi victims and survivors, for believing Jew hatred was done at least in the West. And of course that liberalization and modernization was happening around the world. What a fantasy world I grew up in. I'm glad that my parents are gone so they don't have to witness what is going on again in academia and in many parts of the world as happened before and during WWII.
It is a horrific turn of events and a brutal awakening for many of us, not least because the betrayal comes from the very people who claim to advocate for the oppressed, but because it is specifically a racist betrayal by self-proclaimed anti-racists, and a betrayal of Jews by black activists after Jews stood alongside black activists during Civil Rights.
