Brilliantly written. This Scotsman, happily living in Paris but profoundly pro-American, salutes the writer and the USA, home of the most generous and hospitable people he's ever met. Long live the land of the free.
Thank you for this wonderful, beautiful post. I wish it was in pamphlet form like “Common Sense,” which I could hand out to everyone I meet, including the terminally unhappy people who stage the monthly Indivisible “No Kings” look-at-me events here in my small town.
I am clueless re. soccer, and my last recall of FIFA is that of scandal not that long ago? But this World Cup has been quite an event. I am loving hearing the other countries’ anthems and seeing their flags. And our visitors have been so happy and generous in their social media embrace of our country. Cement mixers — who knew! Both I and Sam Adams brewing will miss the Scots.
Damn. This is powerful. This essay should be a mandatory read in high school. I'm Canadian, have visited the USA several times, and have got to say that you nailed it. It's hard to visit the USA without falling in love.
And God bless you. I read every post and am grateful for them.
As a grateful (legal) immigrant, I agree with every word.

Guid on ye, pal. We’re all lucky to have friends in Scotland. And damn if the Scots-Irish ain’t some of our best folk.

Amen, brother!
It's sad that this needs to be said, but you've said it well.
David, this brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for saying what more of us should have the courage to say.
Thank you, David, for this wonderful post.
God bless America, God bless this beautiful country for the opportunities for all people to make it here!!!🇺🇸
