Like Jay Gatsby from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Donald Trump has always “believed in the green light” of the American Dream with its intoxicating promise of wealth and the symbolic power of extravagance. Like Gatsby, no matter how hard he beats against the current, Trump is “borne back ceaselessly into the past” of his own transgressions. And like Gatsby, Trump has now seen his dreams come true twice. The first time was when he won the presidency this month by a sweeping margin, while the second was when Republicans won control of the House and Senate, giving Trump an open runway for at least the next two years.
Now he can collect all the beautiful shirts he wants.
As I recently wrote, any time either of our political parties has suffered so resounding a defeat, introspection and transformation have unfailingly followed. But not this time. The Democrats are instead apparently satisfied with the rather delusional explanation that half the country is fascist. Still, even if they refuse to reflect, we must. And so what are the reasons the Democrats lost? Well, the top three that American voters have given for not choosing Harris are: inflation, illegal immigration, and her focus “on cultural issues like transgender issues rather than helping the middle class.”
