Citizens of Los Estados Unidos de Mexico...are Mexicans. Citizens of the República Federativa do Brasil...are Brazilians. We citizens of the United States of America are...Americans. It is preposterous to say only Americans should be estadounidenses...unless Mexicans are ALSO estadounidenses.

Great essay, fellow spouse of a legal immigrant, who is also fluent in Spanish and loves Latin cultures and music and foods and LOATHED that vulgar arhythmic "show." My opinion is, the halftime show is for those in the stadium - but this sad boring revue was clearly exclusively for the television audience and not at all for those in the stadium. Look at the clips of the people in the stands; they can't see anything but the sets for the most part.

I'm so glad I grew up before gangsta rap and contemporary pop. It is mostly obscene. I sometimes think Taylor Swift is popular because she is somewhat less obscene than this garbage. I don't believe people can't write better lyrics. They write this shit on purpose because they are selling misogyny and degradation and the business of selling misogyny and degradation is profitable. In the rap and pop worlds every woman is a whore and every man is a dog or a pimp. The public laps it up no pun intended, black and hispanic people because they are used to being degraded and white people because they think it's edgy. Younger white people anyway. I just listen to metal and old rock and blues even though some of those people had their issues at least they aren't acting like they are street whores and pimps.

Look into Bad Bunny's unsavory Venezuelan connection.

Well. Let’s leave the lyrics to one side. After all, as you know, rap lyrics in English are equally raunchy. You might be grateful that Bad Bunny’s family unfriendliness was in Spanish.

I was going to say “a foreign language,” but of course our country doesn’t have an official language, just a collection of more or less popular ones. Puerto Ricans, who are US citizens, mostly speak Spanish. You clearly speak English, and perhaps other languages as well.

The main reason I write is to take issue with your analysis of “American.”

Objections to calling the US “America,” and its inhabitants “Americans,” is universal South of the border. In every country of Latin America, us gringos are politely referred to as either “norteamericanos” (which conflates the Canadians with us in the US) or as “estadounidenses,” which is obviously the correct demonym.

The English-language version is that, contrary to your assertion, people who are from the United States of America should be called Unitedstatesers.

People who live in the New England section of America don’t call themselves the only Americans, and tell the folks in the Midwest to live with a modifier like Midwestern Americans. The part doesn’t own the label for the whole.

North and South America together comprise the Americas, which we call America for short. Western and Eastern Europe together comprise Europe. The EU has European in its name, but it doesn’t get to claim that only it is entitled to the European demonym.

Some rap lyrics are similarly raunchy, yes, but those lyrics would never be approved for a Super Bowl halftime show.

Just look at how comparably tame the actual rap lyrics of recent Super Bowls have been.

I mean Kendrick engaged in antisemitism on America's biggest stage ("they not like us") and called Drake a pedo, but it was all in code at least.
