How Communist Is Kamala?

Less than critics claim but more than supporters admit

On Saturday night, ahead of the start of the Democratic National Convention, former President Trump shared an AI-generated image on Truth Social depicting Vice President Harris at a communist rally in Chicago. After A/B testing Kamabla, Lyin’ Kamala, Laffin’ Kamala, Kamala Crash, Crazy Kamala, and “Dumb as a Rock” Kamala, Trump has finally settled on his opponent’s nickname—Comrade Kamala.

The former president has a history of cooking up childish taunts for those he dislikes. CNN host Jake Tapper became “Fake Tapper,” ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos became “George Slopadopolus,” and California Governor Gavin Newsom became “Gavin Newscum.” These asinine insults sound like the names of Garbage Pail Kids, except the names of Garbage Pail Kids tend to be at least halfway clever.

But for every dozen of these idiotic monikers, Trump hits the mark. In those rare moments, he’s like the child pointing at the naked emperor. He mocked Elizabeth Warren as “Pocahontas” for claiming to have Native American ancestry. When she took a DNA test to shut him up, the test revealed she was as little as 1/1,024th. He mocked Biden’s age, calling him “Sleepy Joe.” In the end, even the Dems agreed.

Now, Trump is running against Harris and calling her a communist. But is this another dumb insult or one of those moments when he’s hit the mark? Let’s consider the three main arguments used to support this accusation. Namely, Harris’s politics and policy proposals, her family background, and her choice of running mate.
